Geographic Area:
Vermont (Burlington)
Reporter: Shawn O
hey george,
here are a few things that i have noticed about the economics in my
area, Burlington Vermont.
I work for a Non-Profit, like many of my friends do here in Burlington.
Due to 9/11 our donations are way down and we have had to layoff 2
people, several folks took pay cuts, and there is a hiring and pay
freeze. Meaning we are working more for less, and not to expect a raise
this year. We are a Art and Craft Gallery in Vermont with three
locations, with a heavy side in retail, which helps support our three
art schools. The retail shop in Burlington is doing well, we get the
bulk of the Vermont tourists. But our other two retail stores are down
for the year.
Also with in the last month, the states largest employer (IBM) laye off
1000 employees, which has hit the local economy pretty good. In a tight
housing market like we have here in Chittenden County, less than 1%
vacantcy rate, I am starting to see more homes and apartments on the
market.
And with the State now dipping into the "rainy day fund" a cut to health
programs and a hike in motor vehicle fees, its not so rosy here in the
green mountain state either.
Thanks for the Website!
