Wednesday morning is going to just plain suck for people in New Orleans, which is expecting landfall about then of Hurricane Isaac which passed by a change to wash republicans and seems instead intent on shutting in oil production in the Gulf of Mexico for a while and slapping the crap out of New Orleans.
As of press time the projection looked like this:
No one is comfortable with this up here in Texas, either, because the storm has been drifting westerly and with more time over hot waters of the Gulf, this thing is likely to increase in intensity. So we could get some heavy rainfall come Wednesday on here, looks like. And the track is still drifty.
And, there may be another one behind it. A NWS advisory says there’s a broad band of lowe pressure about 875 miles west-northwest of the Cape Verde Islands which has a 30 percent of organizing into a tropical storm. Judging by the size of the storm’s pressure gradient, those odds could be changed up shortly.
The price of oil popped over the $100 level in trading overnight, but it may be a chance to fade the rally…depending on whatr happens with Isaac. The rigs are “shutting in” till the danger blows over.
Global Quake Jitters Building
I don’t usually post weekend updates on this site, but we did put up a special Sunday note when that quake swarm down in the Crawley area of Southern California passed the 60-mark. And it has continued to shake overnight.
If we look at the data since Sunday midnight through this morning an hour before press time, there had been approximately 125 quakes in SoCal.
Even more worrisome is that a 7.3 (first reported as a 7.4) took place off the coast of El Salvadore about 11:30 Texas time last night.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that with this much activity on the San Andreas (the Brawley swarm) and the 7.3 that something could “shake loose” on the western side of the Pacific Plate since we’ve had huge quakes all around other areas (Chile, Japan, South Pacific) so in some sense “we’re due.”
The L.A. Times has some comment and pictures out of the area on their website this morning over here. But in weekend coverage, officials were almost dismissive of the swarm saying there had been a similar string back in 1981 but it had not been followed by “The Big One.”
Not that I claim any special knowledge in geology, but seems to me swarms could happen on either side of a Big One and I wonder if the 1980 (Nov. 8, 7.4 off Eureka out at sea) was an example of Big One…just not on the backside of the swarm?
Regardless, that’s just brain-candy as we assess what could be ahead. 2012 researcher Patrick Geryl is back from his travels and sends us this:

Seems neither of the mainstream political parties has room in its ranks for Constitutional-minded folks who are sell-outs to the corporate paymasters who buy politicians through contributions and mutual back-scratching. No sir, no room for common sense and patriotism anymore. Why…that stuff’s extremist, right?

Say…this coming weekend we’ll be rolling into the long weekend and the Triple A fuel guage report says that regular is going for about $3.75 a gallon right now.
Their website also reveals that a year ago it was $3.604 which means 4% higher gas prices. I know about you, but I’m sure glad we don’t have any inflation in America….

N ot sure what to make of this from our Canadian News Analyst up in Winnipeg, but check this out:

Eastern hemisphere dominance of global trade in the 21st century seems to be in the bag at the moment. At any rate, it’s been fun riding the wave up to this point. Another trend to watch is what smarter people than me (hard to believe, I know) have called the 1,500 year curse. The world’s major religions seem to go through major internal upheaval at around 1,500 years, and Islam appears to be aiming to keep the streak going).
Since this past Eid ul-Fitr marked the Hijiri year of 1433, things could start to heat up internally for the world’s Muslims.
